How to find Housing for Exchange Students in Paris, France

While iconic institutions like Sorbonne Université, Université Panthéon-Sorbonne, and SciencesPo Paris and many many more attract scholars from every corner of the globe, the Parisian rental market remains notoriously competitive. Property owners often hesitate to take on international occupants who lack traditional French guarantees. Furthermore, mid-term options covering a single semester are exceptionally rare in standard markets, and online portals are unfortunately rife with fraudulent posts targeting long-distance searchers. However, securing a home in the French capital is completely manageable once you know where to look.

Essential university connections and local resources to find exchange accommodation

Your primary resource should always be your host university’s international office, which regularly provides tailored guidance or access to dedicated local housing networks. Don't hesitate to reach out to their support teams even prior to completing formal enrollment, or to target less competitive short-term housing solutions. Having been on exchange to Paris myself (to Sorbonne Université), I permitted myself to list it first 😊

Is your host university not on this list? Please let us know and we’ll add it here 😉

Beyond academic institutions, explore official municipal portals provided by your host city Paris.Municipalities often have information about the local housing market.

The Cité Universitaire de Paris (CIUP) is a hidden gem. Getting in is not easy, but applying is a no-brainer nevertheless. Located in the 14th Arrondissement, it houses students from all over the world.

Beware of scams. Social channels like Facebook groups are widely used by international arrivals out of necessity, yet they remain primary targets for predatory scams. Protect yourself by adhering strictly to basic safety rules: never wire funds or deposit payments prior to signing a verified contract, and consult local student housing offices to cross-reference unfamiliar addresses. Opting for vetted, peer-reviewed platforms significantly reduces your exposure to fraud.

While general real estate portals are rarely designed with short-term international stays in mind, Exchange Rooms is built specifically for this purpose. The platform focuses exclusively on short-term rentals listed directly by verified local exchange students who are heading abroad themselves. Feel free to have a look at the available accommodation on our platform.

A proactive peer-to-peer approach

An effective strategy to secure accommodation abroad is to make your current home available first. By listing your personal room on Exchange Rooms and sharing the direct link with the international mobility office at your target university in Paris, you can offer housing to Parisian students heading to your home institution. Creating this direct reciprocal connection frequently unlocks housing opportunities at your destination.

Even if you don't have a room to sublet, you can still sign up and share the platform with fellow peers and mobility offices. Expanding the user network directly improves match potential and accommodation access for everyone involved.

Navigating Life in Paris as an Exchange Student

While Paris is widely regarded as one of Europe's premier academic and cultural capitals, budgeting carefully is essential. Expect a baseline total living expenditure between €1,200 and €2,000 per month depending on your lifestyle and housing choice. Publicly funded CROUS residences offer the most economical rooms starting around €600, whereas private studio rentals or shared apartments (colocations) routinely range from €800 to €1,200. International students are often eligible to apply for APL (financial housing assistance) provided by the French government's CAF agency, which helps offset monthly rents.

Getting around the city is fast and affordable thanks to an extensive transit grid. Rather than buying standard adult monthly Navigo passes (€86.40/month), full-time students under age 26 should apply for the Imagine R Étudiant annual pass. At approximately €401 per year (breakdown of ~€33 per month), it grants complete, unlimited access to all metro lines, city buses, tramways, and regional RER trains spanning all transit zones in the Île-de-France region. For active commuters, the city-wide Vélib' Metropole bike-sharing scheme offers an easy, low-cost surface transport option.

Neighborhood dynamics vary significantly across the city’s 20 arrondissements. The historic Latin Quarter (5th and 6th arrondissements) sits at the heart of academic life, steps away from ancient university campuses and lively cafés, though housing here commands top prices. For more budget-conscious students, eastern neighborhoods like Belleville (11th/20th arrondissements) or Ménilmontant offer a diverse, art-filled atmosphere with lower living expenses. Neighborhoods surrounding Bastille and Nation are also popular, striking a balance between accessible transport connections and active nightlife.

Student life in Paris comes with exceptional cultural perks. EU residents under 26 (and long-term visa holders) receive free entry to national museums, including the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, and the Centre Pompidou. Local student support associations like ESN Paris (Erasmus Student Network) host regular welcome events, language exchanges, and affordable regional trips, making it easy to build a global social circle quickly despite the fast-paced nature of the capital.
